Extensive green roofs are primarily installed to give visual appeal, reduce the environmental impact of the building, to create a habitat for flora and fauna and to enhance building performance. They are not usually installed for recreation purposes although extensive planting can be included in intensive schemes. They do not normally require artificial irrigation and they have minimal maintenance requirements. Soils or substrates are usually of a low nutrient type thus suppressing the growth if invasive weed species and of minimal thickness. Plants are selected on their attributes for thriving in such conditions and planting styles are usually naturalistic with the object of establishing a self-sustaining plant community on the roof. Recent developments have seen the creation of conditions similar to "brown field sites" as these are known to support a wide selection of plant, animal and invertebrate communities to the enhancement of city centre environment.
Although it is advised that extensive green roofs are installed over specialist membranes that incorporate anti root attributes, such as ALPAFLORE Axter's extensive systems can be laid over virtually any roofing system. There are many existing roofs, particularly ones overlooked by public areas such as exist on many hotels and offices, which would benefit from the aesthetic improvement of an extensive green roof.
In general water management comprises a two layer waterproofing system ALPAFLORE, a specialist reservoir board to conserve and control water flow and a filter layer to stop soil filling up the pots in the reservoir board. The waterproofing specification will depend upon the requirement for thermal insulation; there are three choices: -
| No insulation | typically used where extensive green roofs are required over underground car parks, cut and cover tunnels etc. |
| Warm roof | has the insulation between the deck and the waterproofing used where the thickness of the layers above the deck need to be kept as thin as possible. However as the waterproofing is above the insulation care must be taken to protect the membranes from maintenance tools etc. |
| Inverted roof | has the insulation on top of the waterproofing. This is Axter’s preferred system as insulation can be designed to resist the heaviest of loads and the waterproofing is well protected from the effects of garden maintenance. |
Specifications listed are for guidance only and Axter cannot be held responsible for any errors or omissions. It is the specifiers responsibility to ensure that the specifications are suitable for the requirements of his construction. The specifications are for traditional extensive gardens where water conservation is a priority..
Please contact Axter if specifications are to include hard landscaping or trafficked areas.
Caution - The ALPAFLORE waterproofing system is considered to be resistant to an acidity level of pH >= 3.
