Axter’s stand 1570 at ecobuild 2010 will feature a domestic roof model showing two sustainable roofing systems.  On one pitch will be Axter’s General Solar PV high performance integrated bituminous roof waterproofing system incorporating photovoltaic cells on its upper surface. General Solar PV is an effective and aesthetic roofing system incorporating thermal insulation and allowing building owners to produce clean electrical energy and take advantage of the new feed-in tariffs.

There is no need for unsightly raised panels with costly supports as Axter’s General Solar PV is capable of producing electricity on both flat and sloping roofs on new build or renovation projects.

Also featured will be Axter’s Hydrolite lightweight extensive green roof system. Drawing on hydroponic technology, the Hydrolite green roof is particularly suitable for use on buildings where weight loading is at a premium. The system comprises a mineral substrate used as a water retaining layer installed under a sedum, wildflower or grass blanket either alone or with an additional thin layer of topsoil.  With Axter’s extensive and intensive green roof systems there is virtually no limit to design possibilities.  An Axter Passadome access hatch completes the roof model.. This is part of Axter’s extensive range of rooftop equipment for natural daylighting, ventilation and smoke evacuation. Through early involvement in a project, Axter’s team helps you to meet all design, specification and budgetary requirements.

Axter is committed to a proactive sustainable development approach in all areas of activity and is in the process of obtaining ISO 14001 accreditation. Full details of Axter’s sustainable waterproofing systems, including environmental impact assessments, are available.

Axter’s Hydropack modular green roof system on award winning building

In moving into their new building, Everything Office, a leading provider of environmentally friendly office supplies, decided to go green. Part of the scheme was to choose Axter’s Hydropack green roof in a tray.

This system provides better insulation and harvests rainwater for the toilets and gardens. In ‘The Greenhouse’, Everything Office has reduced CO2 emissions by 15,000kg per year, their energy bills by 80% and water consumption by 50% and won Construction and Renovation category of The National Energy Efficiency Awards 2008 sponsored by EDF Energy.

Axter’s Hydropack absorbs up to 30l/m2 of rainwater including 8 l/m2 in its water reservoir. Constructed from recycled materials with off-site fabrication, Hydropack is simple to transport and install as no specialist labour is required on site. All elements of an extensive green roof for flat or pitched projects are contained within the tray – reservoir, drainage, filter layer, growing medium and plants (different types of sedum).

Hydropack was installed by Cambridge Asphalte over Axter’s Alpaflore reinforced bituminous membrane waterproofing system with anti-root additive.

With Axter’s extensive and intensive green roof systems there is virtually no limit to green roof design. Through early involvement in the requirements of a project, Axter can deliver value engineering to meet design, specification and budgetary criteria.

Hydrolite extensive green roof system:
Recycling centre goes green...

At first glance this is a rather unprepossessing building next to the A45 but, unlike other recycling plants, the new £5.5m Alibone Recycling Centre, built on the old sewage works site in Earls Barton, is sporting a spectacular green roof designed by Axter.  The sedum covering brings all the benefits of a living roof and requires only minimal maintenance.

The second largest green roof in the country, the Axter specification for Alibone comprises Axter’s Force 4000 Trafic on a metal deck.  On top of this, Axter’s Hydrolite green roof system was installed consisting of Axter's hydroponic mineral substrate 35, topped with a sedum blanket. The work was carried out by local Axtershield Installer Dialin Roofing.

Mark Grey, director of Alibone Recycling which will run the site, said this was the first time the company had used the unconventional covering and that “the overall effect will be priceless”.

With Axter’s extensive and intensive green roof systems there is virtually no limit to green roof design. Through early involvement in the requirements of a project, Axter can deliver value engineering to meet all design, specification and budgetary requirements.

Axter's stand at ecobuild 2008 was very successful with all the staff being continuously busy every day. Axter's proven track record in the green arena shone through.

Exhibiting at ECOBUILD for the first time, European waterproofing giant Axter presented a range of products for both intensive and extensive green roofs as well as innovative solutions for green walls.

Of greatest interest was HYDROPACK, a complete extensive sedum green roof system in a tray. HYDROPACK meets all environmental requirements comprising recycled materials and off site fabrication. The system is simple to transport and install so that no specialist labour is required on site as all elements (drainage, reservoir, growing medium, filter layer, plants) are pre-packaged for easy handling. HYDROPACK allows activity on the waterproofing for maintenance or repair work without constraint, as the trays are easily unclipped for removal and reinstatement later.

In addition Axter promoted the VERTIGE irrigation system for extensive green roofs offering a lightweight solution under sedum, grass or wildflower greening without the need for a growing medium. When linked to a grey water recycling system VERTIGE ensures that roofs stay green even in the driest of summers.

Also on show was a modular green walling system ideal for disguising bland exteriors such as multi-storey car parks.

CE marking

An explanation of the complex issues regarding CE marking in today's new Europe has been added here.

Although some products such as Axter's WILOTEKT-PLUS structural waterproofing system already carry a CE mark the recently published harmonised European Standard BS EN 13707 : 2004 Flexible sheets for waterproofing - Reinforced bitumen sheets for roof waterproofing - Definitions and characteristics means that it will not be too long before we see many more CE marked products appearing on the UK market.

In the coming years CE marking is destined to become the main method of establishing "fitness of materials" under the Building Regulations but as this topic is not well understood Axter's Managing Director, John Medlock, has prepared a briefing note on the subject entitled "Product certification in the new Europe - CE marking explained". This can be freely downloaded by clicking on the link below.

CPD Seminar - CE marking explained

To supplement the briefing document on CE marking Axter offer a free CPD seminar on the subject. If you would like Axter to come to your premises to give this seminar please contact Axter directly.
