Listed below is a general specification using a mechanically fastened single-ply polymeric membrane. (Axter can provide written detailed specifications to suit any building on demand).

| Metal deck | The metal deck should be specially designed for the purpose and supplied and installed in accordance with British Standards or other industry Codes of Practice. It must be securely fastened to the supporting steel work with side stitched side laps. |
| Vapour control layer | Loose lay Axter's VAPFOIL aluminised PE sheet with overlapping edges sealed with Axter's self-adhesive taping strip. |
| Thermal insulation | Loose lay rock/mineral wool insulation1 such as Rockwool's DUOROCK to a thickness determined by 'U'-value requirements. Axter can advise on required thickness. |
| Top layer | Loose lay and then mechanically fasten, through the selvedge, Axter's EXCELFLEX, colour to choice, polymeric single ply membrane using Axter EVF 2C screws and Axter proprietary edge stress plates. Fixing density to be determined by local wind conditions, apply to Axter for further information. Side and end laps must be securely sealed with a min 2 mm visible bitumen bead by hot air welding or torching. |
| Details | At the base of all upstands a reinforcement layer of Axter's EXCEL RENFORT angle strip 250 mm girth should be installed centrally in the angle. This should be mechanically fastened to the deck and bonded to the vertical surface. The top layer should then be taken up the upstand. |
| Rainwater outlets | A 1m x 1m soaker of Axter's EXCEL RENFORT membrane must be installed prior to the installation of the EXCELFLEX layer and the flange of the rainwater outlet should be encapsulated between the two layers. |
| Gutters | A base layer of Axter's EXCEL RENFORT must be mechanically fastened to the deck prior to the installation of the EXCELFLEX. |

1/ Other types of insulation can be used; Axter can supply further information upon demand.
In general specifications should follow the guidelines given in:
British Standard Code of Practice BS 6229:2003, Flat roofs with continuously supported coverings.
British Standard Code of Practice BS 8217:2004, Flexible bitumen sheet roofing.
Specifications are given for roof slopes< 5°. Additional mechanical fastening will be required for higher roof slopes. Apply to Axter for further information.
Axter advises that an AXTERSHIELD INSTALLER, who has specialist knowledge of Axter's systems, installs the specification given above and from whom extended guarantees can be obtained.
